Artist Statement
Briana was born and raised in the Pacific Northwest. With artist parents and an extended family of painters, jewelry makers, seamstresses, interior designers, calligraphers and glass artists… creative expression was intrinsically tied to her sense of self, family, and community.
With no shortage of inspiration in the natural surroundings of mountains, forests, rivers, and coastlines, as a child Briana developed an appreciation for feeling small in the face of natural beauty and powerful in her own ability to capture it with color and medium. This aperture expanded when she moved to California and earned a degree in Liberal/Civic Studies and Art at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, honing her skills in mediums including watercolor, pastel, printmaking, charcoal, acrylic and oil paint.
Her work plays with reality and is purposefully dreamy, evocative, and centered on capturing the essence of not only a place, but of one moment in that place. Beyond landscapes, she explores the human figure, realism, impressionism, and the abstract.
True to her roots, she also enjoys working in interior design - utilizing scale, layout, texture and color as different forms of artistic and personal expression.
Briana has been fortunate enough to meet many talented artisans and designers in this field whose work and wisdom remain ongoing sources of inspiration and guidance. Briana currently resides in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband and two children. While she wove art into the every day of their younger years, she is now expanding her practice and production to continue the tradition of creative expression within which she was born.
